Adjusting the toilet
Fill and flush mechanisms vary according to the manufacturer, so you must follow the specific instructions included with the toilet.
To fill the toilet, turn on the water at the stop valve. Check for leaks at the stop valve and fill valve. Carefully watch as the toilet begins to fill. The water flow should begin to slow and stop at the fill line marked inside the tank. If this doesn't happen, follow the manufacturer's direction on adjusting the water level. Some valves have a float with an arm that can be bent for adjustment; others have adjusting set screws.
After the tank fills, flush the toilet a couple of times. Note the action of the flapper valve that's opened by the flush lever. This valve should open and stay open until most of the water drains out of the tank, and then closes. You may have to adjust the chain leading from the flush level to the flapper valve to get this valve to stay open and close completely when the tank is drained of water. If the tank doesn't completely fill, you may have to adjust the position of the tankball rod to get this action correct.
